My Winter Break is finally underway, and my two-week vacation from my day job couldn’t have come at a better time. We’ve been under so much stress lately, and dealing with house issues while simultaneously preparing for the holidays has me ready to pull my hair out. While I surely don’t mind stepping out for an occasional meal or drink to catch up with a friend, I’ll be taking full advantage of the fact that I don’t need to be anywhere or do anything in particular until the new year begins. Since we’re trying to stick to a tight budget this year, I’ve been attempting to think of creative ways to relax and entertain myself (and the hubby!) around the house. Check out a few of the things on my list and use them as inspiration for a low-key, inexpensive holiday break for yourself!
1. Catch up on your favorite TV shows, or get into a new one. Hello, 6 seasons of Parks and Recreation. I think I’ll watch you all just in time to be caught up for the final season that starts in January.
2. Clean. This one might not be the most fun, but let’s be honest… it needs to happen.
3. Try a new recipe. I love to bake, but it’s tough testing out new recipes with a packed schedule. I’ll be trying out a few while I have an abundance of taste-testers around for the holidays.
4. Organize or rearrange. Moving things around can make a space feel new again, and sometimes reorganizing can be more efficient for your needs. A fresh space allows new possibilities through fresh eyes.
5. Learn a new skill. My sister taught herself to juggle last week. Completely random, but entertaining for all of us.
6. Reconnect with a friend. Invite friends over for snacks and conversation, or take some time out of your day to call or video chat with those that are long distance.
7. Get crafty. I love DIY projects, especially when I can create them things that I already have around the house.
8. Read. I tend to read more during the summer when I’m sitting outside by the pool, but when I have nothing more important to tend to, I love browsing our bookshelves for things I have but haven’t read yet. I also have a few friends with similar interests that are always up for a book swap.
9. Paint your nails. I’m usually in too much of a rush to take the time to paint my nails and let them dry properly. When I don’t have anywhere to be, I like to try different colors and patterns that I normally don’t have the patience for.
10. Pamper yourself. Take a bubble bath or give yourself a facial. Try out some new makeup or a different hair style.
11. Play a game. Board games can be great for a few laughs and some friendly competition.
12. Make a new playlist. I love looking for new music, especially upbeat tunes that are great for the gym.
13. Create a photo album. Almost all of my pictures are in electronic form, and many are forgotten. I’m in the process of having them printed in books to have as keepsakes.
14. Make some extra money. Post items on Craigslist that you’re looking to get rid of. Not only will you make a little extra cash, but you’ll de-clutter your home, as well!
15. Surf the net. Catch up on current affairs. Investigate a potential vacation destination. Read reviews for restaurants you’d like to visit or movies you’d like to see. It’s fairly easy to waste time online.
