I just got back from a nearly-perfect trip to the beach. While the weather was great, we did have a day of rain and cloudy skies. Our favorite thing to do when the forecast takes a turn for the worst is hit up the outlets (hurray for tax-free shopping in Delaware!).
I’d like to think I’m pretty thrifty when it comes to hunting down sales that actually DO save me money, but there are a number of tricks retailers use to try to encourage spending. Check out a few of these tips to spend smarter and save more!
1. Avoid high-low pricing. Stores often encourage spending by offering high mark-downs on certain items with the hopes that you’ll purchase other non-sale items while you’re there (Target, I’m looking at you!). Try to head in with a plan and only get what you came for.
2. Remember what you learned in math class about whole numbers. When items are priced at $29.99 or $36.95 (or similarly), shoppers tend to round down instead of up to the nearest whole number, leaving the illusion that you might be saving a few bucks. Pay attention to the numbers on the left of the decimal!
3. Not everything is for “a limited time only.” Retailers create a sense of urgency by placing time limits on sales and product quantities, encouraging shoppers to make purchases “while supplies last.” Unless it’s a product that’s being discontinued, it will likely hit the sale rotation again in the future.
4. Beware of markups. Stores price items to make a profit. You’re better off waiting to make a purchase after the item has been on shelves for a short time, and you’ll be more likely to get a clearance price on it.
5. Costs don’t necessarily reflect quality. Sometimes, our instincts tell us that if certain things cost more, they must be of better quality, and are considered a status symbol. This is occasionally true, but you should use your best judgement in each situation.
