8 Ways to Save A Dollar A Day

So you’ve set some savings goals for yourself and devised a budget to help you reach them. You’re on the right track! I’m not sure about you, but sometimes when I think about my financial goals, they seem so far off into the future, and I feel like I’ll never save enough. I’ve tried to find little ways to contribute a little extra cash to my savings every month to help myself get there just a little bit faster. Can you apply any of these small gestures to your day-to-day spending to grow your own savings account?

1. Throw your change in a piggy bank. Collect all of your loose change left over from cash purchases and stash it for a rainy day. You’d be surprised how fast it can add up.

2. Skip the name brand. Go generic to save a few extra bucks at the supermarket or drugstore.

3. Pass on your morning Starbucks run. Bringing coffee from home for your commute can save you up to $5 extra per day.

4. Pack a lunch. Going out to eat every afternoon can really drain your wallet. Packing a lunch will not only save you money, but will likely be healthier, too.

5. Opt for water instead of soda. If you do find yourself out to lunch on occasion, choosing water as your beverage will knock a buck or two off of your bill.

6. Be conscious of your power consumption. Not using your computer? Turn it off! Are you done in the kitchen? Turn the lights out before you leave the room! While you might not see an immediate return, seemingly insignificant actions will add up to bigger savings in the long run.

7. Check fuel costs before filling up your gas tank. While it may not be worth it to drive across town to save a few extra cents per gallon, it might be a good idea to find out which gas station near you offers the lowest price.

8. Is there a coupon code for that? If you’re headed out to a specific store, check for coupon codes online first to see if they’re running any sales or specials.
