We’re well into August now, which means back-to-school commercials and ads are EVERYWHERE! I’ll admit, they make me nostalgic for shopping with my mom, picking out new clothes to wear, choosing notebooks and binders in the perfect colors, and just the general feeling of starting something new. I’d love to go back and re-live some of the good ol’ days, but I certainly don’t miss writing research papers and calculus problems! While my school days may be over (at least until the next generation comes along), I’m sure plenty of you out there are getting ready to head out to tackle the school supply section of your local department store. Gearing up for the new year doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune! Keep some of the following tips in mind when stocking up on school essentials…
What do you really need? Check to see what supplies you already have that will work again for the new school year – items like calculators, scissors, pens and pencils, or even notebooks can often be carried over if they still serve their purpose well. Will your kids need anything additional for new upcoming classes? Save some cash by only buying what you really need and avoiding repeat purchases. Devise a plan and stick to it!
What’s on sale? Some stores offer specials or discounts on certain items, such as $1 notebooks or buy-one-get-one-free deals. Keep your eyes peeled for these and shop around a bit before making any purchases – you still have plenty of time before class is back in session! Check ads in your local newspaper to get an idea of what different stores are offering before you head out.
Compare prices online. Technology makes it super easy to compare what different items will cost at different stores. You might even find a better deal somewhere you wouldn’t expect to look, like an on-line only retailer (i.e. Amazon.com).
There are deals for all ages and items. Sometimes when we hear about “Back-to-School Deals,” we think of your standard office supply staples, but don’t forget that these sales can also carry over into housewares – college kids are heading back, too! This is a great time to pick up small appliances, storage/organization solutions, and bedding, just to name a few common necessities.
Set limits. This is a great way to get your kids involved in purchasing decisions, and to teach them about smart spending early! Have a conversation about the funds that have been allocated for back-to-school shopping, and how they think they would best be spent. Point out the importance of wants vs. needs when helping them choose what to shop for. Use this as a teachable moment!
